Film & Audiences
Would you rather see a movie in a cinema or at home?
There's always a place for something, even movies have their own place where you can see a movie but there are many reasons for making it special, the technology used and the size of the screen and sound to get people as close as ever to the movie itself, besides in my theory sitting between strangers do give it a special psychological reaction to your experience.
But it's not just cinemas, there are special screenings at special places especially for indie films or at film festivals but obviously you wouldn't see and experience the same size of technology you'd see at a cinema.

Another way to watch your movie is simply at home with yourself or with the family in front of a tv or a laptop, there are many channels that show movies non-stop and there are way too many streaming services that'll provide you with any movie or tv show you'd like to watch from the oldest to the newest such as Netflix, Starz or Wavo.

so, going back to the question above
Would i rather see a movie at the cinema or home?
my answer:
Would i rather see a movie at the cinema or home?
my answer:
As a part of the audience myself I prefer to watch movies at home all the time, rarely at a special exhibition somewhere in a gallery or a film festival but most of all I go to the cinema on weekends watching the biggest or smallest films in 2D, it kind of turned into a habit for me by now but if i'm forced to watch a film in 3D because there aren't any other showings in 2D then i'll watch it in 3D but definitely not all the time.
I have many reasons for preferring the cinema over festivals or special screenings mainly for the huge screen and the sound system being all around you but also there's nothing to distract you from the actual film, the only thing in front of you is a huge loud screen that connect you to the emotions implanted in the film and get the reaction out of you but also sitting in between strangers really help give you a connected feeling to the film and the atmosphere.
Here's a video that show how watching a movie with people can really affect you, especially when you watch a horror film and hear people scream all around you, that's actually a plus in my book:

The 3D do help many people get connected to the film or even the new 4DX but in my case I like to keep it simple, just a 2D film with no special technology connected to it, I don't mind watching any movie in a cinema full of people but also if there's a big movie I've been waiting for i'd watch it really early on a weekday to avoid the crowds, I'll still find a small number of film lovers who'll treat the movie as I will with complete silence and appreciation but my preferred place to watch a movie would be at home, the cinema is a plan B but not a must for me.

I'd love to watch It with that audience. Where was that audience when I went to see It? And as for your thoughts on it, I really want to know more about how you feel about this communal experience you love when you're watching a movie. Maybe you could somehow convince me, because I usually hate that experience.
ReplyDeleteI most definitely think that today, the biggest reason we go to the cinema is for the experience it provides, whether it be due to the huge screen and excellent sound, or the experience of watching a film we've been excited to watch for months (dare I say, years) with friends and fans, though I personally dislike people who obnoxiously cheer every five minutes - but that's just my opinion, after all though I dislike that I do like hearing other people laugh when there is a funny moment and as you mention on your post hearing people get scared when watching a horror film.
ReplyDeleteI think we can agree that the arrival of streaming services such as Netflix or Wavo did make a small paradigm shift in the way we consume films. I do not believe they necessarily will "kill" cinema, but I do think it may shift the reason WHY people go there, since it is now easier than ever to watch films at home rather than at the cinema.
In the end, I agree - watching at home is amazing! But doesn't undermine cinema too much, to me at least.
